Duncan Park Memorial Project Introduction

In Duncan Park, there is a Veterans' Memorial that lists the names of men from Spartanburg County who died in service during World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. There are 639 names.

With the American Legion Post 28 as the major sponsor, I am documenting these men, their lives and their service.

We hope to have a book published and ready for sale by Veterans Day (November 11), 2010. The publisher will be Honoribus Press.

If you have information on anyone listed on the Memorial, please contact me.

  1. As a member of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and President of the Tri-State Genealogical Society (TSGS) of Evansville, Indiana --- I am very proud and pleased to see this type of project being conducted for 639 U.S. soldiers. It is ambitious, but will be a great tribute to these individuals, their families and Spartanburg Co., SC. I signed on as a follower, so I can keep up with your progress. Good luck and may God bless you!

  2. Hi John,

Thank you for your comment and encouragement.

On our research trip to St. Louis is April, we stopped in Evansville and toured the LST that is anchored there. I have a public album on Picasa of the pictures I took while there. There are about 100 of them. Feel free to look around or if you like, I can send an invitation to them.

  3. Frieda, I am a nephew of William E. Parris. I do know about his family and that his mother was sent a copy of Britian's Homage (apparently a book) by the The Times of London. I know his Army # and that he participated in the invasion of Kiese Shima, Ie Shima, and Okinawa.

I was in London last month and tried to find out information as to why he was listed in Britain's Homage, but did'nt have any luck. Any suggestions on how I can find out more about him?

    Thank you. Spencer

    1. Spencer. Just checking to see if you are monitoring this page. I have determined that there were 2 William E. Parris from SC in WWII. Is your uncle the one from Spartanburg or the one from Columbia. The one from Spartanburg was a private; the one from Columbia was a Captain. Please get in touch with me at dddfmd@msn.com

      Thank you.
