It's been a while since I posted anything on this Blog! Just too much going on!
I have completed the processing of about 1/2 the images from the latest research trip to St. Louis. Am hoping to finish the remaining ones over the long July 4th weekend!
I've also created a display board to outline the project. It was displayed at the Memorial Day Ceremony at Duncan Park.
This blog has been established to document the progress on the project to document the names on the Veterans' Memorial in Duncan Park in Spartanburg, SC.

Research Update - 3 February 2009
Yesterday the final 302 requests were e-mailed to the National Military Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. This completes all the requests needed for the WWI and WWII records. If we don't make it through all of them in April, we will make another trip in June.
Also, I met with Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Goznell regarding her brother James Shands. She shared photos of him along with POW cards and letters regarding his medals (Silver Star and Purple Heart). There was also a letter from MacArthur. She also shared a book that was written by one of his comrades. The title is Soldier - Priest by John J. Morrett.
I have appointments set up this week with Willie Bishop regarding her relative Roy Bishop and with another gentleman who has 2 uncles and 1 great uncle on the memorial.

Research Update - 14 January 2009
Just an update on the progress of the research.
Before the Holidays, Mr. Billy Byers of the Drayton area provided information and photographs on his brother Volney (WW II).
Mr. William Littlejohn has provided information and photographs on Jesse Littlejohn (WWII)
Mrs. Josephine Slaten of Pacolet has provided information and photographs on her brother: James Albert Edmonds (WWII)
Mr. Robert Hall of Inman has shared a scrapbook created by his mother and sister during WWII. It included many newspaper articles, pictures, obituaries, etc. about local men in service at the time.
Mr. Odell Vaughn has shared a photograph of his buddy Boyce Sullivan (WWII).
__________________________________________________
Electronic images for WWI and WWII names "A" through "C" created from the October St. Louis trip have been printed out and filed in my filing cabinet.

The first 50 requests have been submitted to St. Louis for our April research trip. These requests must be submitted individually at least 8 weeks ahead of the visit. The approval form to bring a camera into the research center has also been submitted. Will continue to submit research requests as I complete them so that the center staff are not overwhelmed at the last minute.
That's all for tonight. Am taking a couple days break from working on the project as it has been non-stop since the semester break

Research update - Jan. 2009
Over the Christmas break, I completed the review and classification of the images made on our October research trip to St. Louis at the National Personnel Records Center. There were 1,392 images. They are now filed in electronic folders ready to print out and file in my paper files. I have also begun to receive photographs from the American Battle Monument Commission of gravestones and tablets of missing from foreign American cemeteries.
During the month of January I hope to reconnect with those who responded as a result of the newspaper article. There are about 30 of them.
